  1. Keep a menstrual diary for at least 2 months - either print one from this website or complete our new interactive menstrual chart.
  2. Diet is crucial -
    • Reduce
      • Sugar
      • Salt
      • Caffeine                                                                       
      • Alcohol
    • Increase
      • Fruit
      • Vegetables
      • Water
    • Include
      • Three hourly carbohydrate snack (rice cakes, crackers, bread sticks...)
  3. Increase exercise - speak to your doctor if you have concerns about exercise.
  4. Reduce stress, take time out for yourself - listen to some music, have a relaxing bath, go for a walk in the countryside...

  6. We are all different.  We dont all suffer the same symptoms, or with the same severity.  There are any number of approaches so use your menstrual chart to identify the key symptoms you want to takcle.
  7. Herbal and alternative treatments can help.  There are plenty of over the counter treatments.  Only take one at a time or you wont know which is working, and they can be expensive.  If you get no noticable benefit after three months then change the treatment.
  8. Consider appropriate alternative therapies.  NAPS can help advise.  Many women prefer to take this route rather than a traditional one.
  9. Maybe you now need to go to the doctor - take your completed chart with you - dont be put off if your GP doesn't understand - that is not unusual.  The Practice nurse will almost certainly be able to direct you to the most appropriate GP in your practice.  GP's can offer a wide variety of treatments, mostly its trial and error to find what suits you - try each suggestion for about 3 months to find out if the method helps.
