Extolling the virtues of Red Clover
9 Oct 2006
The benefits of Red Clover for PMS and menopausal symptoms was widely discussed at our clinical conference last month. Novogen UK have kindly put us in touch with two people who have found Red Clover invaluable.

I just didn't think it was the menopause, I was only 42 when the symptoms began - continuous mood swings, hot flushes, night sweats and just generally not feeling like the 'old' Carole. I spent months questioning everything, snapping at friends and my poor mother, tired from sweating at night. I even invested in a new super duvet but nothing helped. I felt life was slightly out of my control as I was just irrational and couldn't cope.
After talking to a girlfriend about my night sweats, hot flushes and mood swings I finally heard about a new menopause test by Novogen Redclover. I tried this at home and in a few minutes the test told me I wasn't going through the menopause which was fantastic, but I still had all these symptoms so I went to see my GP who explained that it was the peri-menopause which is the build up to the menopause. My GP recommended taking Novogen Redclover and making some lifestyle changes which I have since done.
Within about three weeks my hot flushes and night sweats seemed to calm right down and after about six weeks I just felt a lot calmer and able to cope again. I have now been on Novogen Redclover for six months and I really do feel so much better. In control, not so snappy and my mood swings have totally levelled out.
I will continue to test but at the moment I still have my periods, which although irregular, still are there but at least I know now I can do a simple test to find out what is happening to my body and I feel in control again which is fantastic.
Sandra Tozeland’s story
Despite the below freezing temperatures and the howling wind, there was one house in Whitley Bay where the bedroom windows were usually flung open. As most people huddled under their duvets seeking warmth, I was literally dripping with sweat, hence the open windows. But while I was suffering from meltdown, my poor husband Steven was shivering in the artic conditions of our bedroom. Night sweats was just one of the symptoms that was beginning to affect me.
I was having hot flushes, lacking in energy, couldn’t lose weight, and I was very irritable. One minute I was very emotional and crying, the next I was ranting and raving. I couldn’t understand why it was happening. Stupid, little things used to really irritate me. I was completely over-reacting. But I couldn’t help myself.Despite showing the classic symptoms of a woman going through the menopause, I dismissed it. Surely at just 38 I was too young?
Worried, I contacted my GP who, after a blood test dropped the bomb shell. I was indeed going through the menopause. I was shocked when I first found out, but it did answer a lot of questions. Looking back when I was having the hot flushes, the girls at work used to tease me by saying I was on the change. But I took it as a joke. By now I was 40 and to add insult to injury, I was going through this physical change somewhat prematurely. I seemed to be suffering from many of the associated side effects, nearly drowning in my night sweats, which were on the hour, every hour. I just sweated buckets, and it was very embarrassing because it was so extreme and so frequent.
To relieve the symptoms, the doctor offered me Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), but I decided against it. I didn’t really fancy it. It didn’t agree with my mother and I felt I’d been pumping enough hormones down my throat for years with the pill so I looked at natural alternatives. Fortunately, I have worked in a pharmacy for the past 24 years, and I couldn’t have been in a better place for finding out what else was on the market.
I was selling Red clover and people spoke highly of its results, so this was my opportunity to try it out. And the results were spectacular. I couldn’t believe how good it was. Within days I felt a difference, the hot sweats were right down, and they most certainly weren’t as ferocious. After a couple of weeks of taking the tablets the night sweats were completely gone and on top of that my energy levels shot up.
But it wasn’t just me who was pleased with the results, so was my long suffering husband, who is now able to sleep soundly, and more importantly, warmly, during those cold winter nights. I must admit I feel more confident, and my husband’s noticed a big difference since I stopped sweating him out of the bed.”
