NAPS invited to help women in prison
4 Sep 2007
NAPS has been approached by a woman prisoner asking the Association to help her mount a one day menstrual health education initiative for other inmates.
We have welcomed this invitation. Such an event would provide the opportunity both to inform all women in the establishment about PMS and related health issues, and to increase our knowledge of the issues affecting women in prison. NAPS will seek support to facilitate the presence of nationally respected experts on menstrual health, reproductive health and menopause. This would mean that there would also be the opportunity for personal advice. The founder of NAPS Dr. Katerina Dalton worked closely with women imprisoned in Holloway and identified a relationship between offending behaviour and the menstrual cycle. Indeed PMS has been used as part of the defence in some cases. The event envisaged could also help our understanding in this respect.
It also follows earlier work the Association did to inform the development of PMS guidance for the Women’s Correctional Service of New South Wales.
